Tapati is a traditional festival celebrated on Easter Island during the first 10 days of February since 1968. It began as an exclusive celebration for Easter Islanders, but today it is a time to share culture with tourists who arrive at this time of year. The ultimate reason for the celebration is the election of the Tapati Queen. Two candidates are nominated for the title, supported by their families, friends, and visitors. Each group forms an alliance that competes against the other through a series of trials and competitions, evoking the rivalries between the ancient clans that ruled the island. The group that earns the most points will earn its representative the symbolic right to reign over the island for the rest of the year.
